The government of Nepal has authorized the use deadly force against those wishing to protest the Olympic torch run across Mt. Everest. I will be amused if there are large anti-Chinese demonstrations in Nepal, as the populace just gave the Maoist party 2 out of 3 seats in the new constitutional assembly.

As unexpected results continue to manifest after Nepal’s recent election, one particular result is worth noting: Baban Singh from Gaur, the capital of Rautahat district. Mr. Singh, allegedly, is an old-school flatlands dacoit (though not as cool as some).

I just finished listening to This Week with George Stephanopoulos, which I do almost every Monday morning. During a 10-minute period of questioning, National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley confuses Nepal for Tibet, repeatedly saying “Nepal” when he meant “Tibet.” No correction occurs during the interview or in the subsequent article on ABCNews.com.

The AP is reporting Peace Corps has suspended its operations in Kenya. I completed my two-year service with Peace Corps/Nepal just before that program was suspended.

At the end of my service in Nepal, Maoist-affiliated groups were gaining influence and growing violent in the Terai. While rhetorically identical, the backgrounds of these groups differed drastically.
