The precedent-following Oxford University Press has removed hyphens from about 16,000 words in their upcoming Shorter OED revision, according to Simon Rabinovitch of Reuters.
Over-hyphenation is a problem. As is under-hyphenation. While ice-cream easily becomes ice cream, compound adjectives should remain “precedent-following.”
