Just before our trip to Darjeeling

Binita had been giving me steady updates and analysis on Indian Idol 3. The other Indian Idol shows had gone unnoticed. But the oft-neglected Nepali community had someone competing in its third installment—a Nepali named Prashant Tamang.

On September 23, 2007, Tamang won Indian Idol 3. His talents (though modest, comparatively) were boosted by extremely active supporters. For example, the mayor of a city near Darjeeling, Mirik, pledged Rs. 10,000 for SMS voting.

Now that Tamang has won, it’s less about community than communal. Riots, that is. The Times Online is reporting riots in Siliguri and elsewhere in India’s north-east. Tamang has gone on national TV to ask for calm.

In ten days, Binita and I will be flying to Siliguri on our way to Darjeeling. I’m not really bothered by all this, though. Odd that Tamang was formerly a police officer. I do feel as if India goes from zero to riot in almost nothing flat. So much for Naxalites and Maoists.

I’m not sure what that RJ said precisely, but I suspect it doesn’t warrant throat slitting.

@Kevin: I’ve met Prashant in Kathmandu. He himself says he’s Nepali. And remember, Indian Idol is a popularity contest, which means your opinion is in the minority (thank God). More people in India wanted Prashant, a Nepali, to win. That’s a fact.

Scott says: “I’ve met Prashant in Kathmandu. He himself says he’s Nepali.”

I met George Bush in Delhi and he says he is Indian.

Scott says: “More people in India wanted Prashant, a Nepali, to win”

Indian Idol does not follow one (wo)man, one vote principle. Instead it is one SMS one vote. The results could have been different had a fair poll been carried out.

PS: I have nothing against Prashant though.

Ah, but you mistake fair for popular. And if the others had been more popular, they would have received more SMS votes.

Supporters of Prashant got mad voting for him. Your whole country as well as 2 Indian states raised millions of rupees to support him. It was as if his victory would symbolize your victory over India(??). You voted exclusively on racial lines. Poor guy Amit didn’t have such overzealous voters. That is why I suspect this was not a very fair contest.

Yes shrestha. We dirty Indians have to realize that the Nepali shit has won through unfair means. Meanwhile, you better get back to Maoism and enjoy your country’s rape by China!
